Hello friends,
Today I’m in Ottawa. No, the Liberals didn’t suddenly recall Parliament. Instead, I’m here for the Conservatives’ national caucus meeting.
Conservatives have put forward a Canada First Plan to respond to the many challenges our country is facing. However, rather than take us up on these constructive proposals or allow Parliamentary debate on them, Liberals have kept Parliament shut down.
Here are a few things I’ve been working on in the meantime.
URGENT: NDP-Liberal Government Survey on Expansion of Euthanasia/MAID ends TODAY
Canada is consistently criticized in debates around euthanasia globally, as a case study in how NOT to handle the issue. UN human rights experts have described our MAID program as violating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We have the most radically permissive euthanasia regime in the world. But rather than addressing the problems, our government continues to look for opportunities to further expand it.
The Liberal government recently introduced a survey on expanding Euthanasia/MAID to advance requests. A policy like this would effectively allow people to give advanced consent to receive euthanasia – allowing people to be killed who do not or cannot provide consent at the time.
The deadline for completion of this survey is TODAY — Friday, February 14.
The survey is biased, but I strongly encourage you to fill it out and let our government know your views.
Also, though, there have been some bizarre technical problems with it. Check out this video from my constituency office, where I explain. Canada will never be the 51st state, but it seems that the people who developed this survey do not know where Canada starts and ends...
New Podcast Episode: Protecting Canadian Charities
While Canadians are already struggling, Canadian charities are trying to fill that gap. But charities also face a series of unique challenges, some of them driven by government policy.
On the latest episode of Resuming Debate, I was joined by Bruce MacDonald, President and CEO of Imagine Canada, and Deina Warren, Director of Legal Affairs at the Canadian Centre for Christian Charities (CCCC). We discussed the current growing need and important role charities are playing in Canada and what the relationship between government and charitable institutions should look like.
We also discuss recent recommendations of the Finance Committee that threaten the charitable sector. If you oppose the NDP-Liberal dominated Finance Committee’s recommendations on kneecapping the charitable sector, you can click this link to sign the petition.”
In my last episode with MP Michael Cooper, one of the many things we spoke about was how the Liberals continue to turn a blind eye to foreign interference. The Liberals’ low barrier to entry to participate in their leadership race makes it easier for bad-faith actors, including foreign actors, to sway it. And this doesn’t just affect the Liberals, it affects all of Canada, because they’re not just picking the next Liberal leader, they’re picking the next Prime Minister of Canada.
If you haven't already, be sure to subscribe to Resuming Debate wherever you enjoy your podcasts so you don't miss an episode. You can find links to my podcast on all platforms by clicking here:
Addressing Sudan’s Humanitarian Crisis
On February 1st, I met with members of Edmonton’s Sudanese community on the developing humanitarian crisis caused by the conflict in Sudan. This conflict has the potential to kill 12-13 million people by mass starvation, and is shaping up to be the worst humanitarian crisis since Mao’s Great Leap Forward. We must not only seek the conflict’s immediate resolution, but punish bad actors providing weapons and aid to fuel the conflict.
If you’re interested in learning more about this crisis, my podcast episode with Dr. Unni Krishnan and Abier Mustafa from a few months ago is a great starting point.
My Latest Column: Parliament Should Be Sitting
In my latest column, I delved a bit deeper into the issue of the ongoing prorogation of Parliament at a time like this.
Liberals have repeatedly attempted to replace the normal work of a healthy functioning Parliament with “executive federalism”. Not only is Parliament invariably more representative than the invitation-only summits and negotiation meetings entailed in this model, it also has a different organizing logic. While these fora often see a push for agreeability, Parliament and its committees are designed to forge solutions through the crucible of conflict.
I always appreciate hearing from Canadians in my riding and across the country. Feel free to email my office at garnett.genuis@parl.gc.ca or share your feedback in the comments below. You can also click here to find me on other social media platforms.
All the best,
Garnett Genuis MP

Hello Garnet. Of more serious concern is Bill 293, the pandemic preparedness bill. Will you address that and set up a similar petition? Most Canadians have no idea how serious a threat it is.
From Adrian Rhodes. Just letting you know, I filled out the survey about 24 or 25 times. If I did it and I'm against the practice, how much more would the other side tell their followers to do the same? This survey is flawed and cannot be trusted.
